Independent Learner (6 and Up)Orton-Gillingham based ReadingSuitable for students looking to learn to read for the first time or just fill in the gaps, our O-G based reading takes students from Kindergarten through 3rd grade concepts in just two 16 week semesters. Classes are 45 minutes long, twice weekly.
What is Orton-Gillingham based instruction? Orton-Gillingham is a highly successful multi-sensory, systematic approach to learning to read that is appropriate for beginners, those wishing to fill in gaps, and those with reading disorders alike. Fancher Education Center has one of the few Orton-Gillingham certified tutors in the state of Alabama and is the only supplementary education institution offering a class specifically for home-schoolers. Fall 2017 semester is 16 weeks from August 7 to December 1 and covers Kindergarten - Grade 1 concepts Spring Semester covers Grades 2 and 3 concepts Prerequisites: It is recommended that students be familiar with letters and their base sounds. Mommy and Me (5 and Under)Mommy and Me Pre-Reading Class**Great opportunity for students with older siblings in O-G Reading**
Children 5 and under get to explore new learning activities with mom in enjoyable playtime activities. Each week we will try out a new nursery rhyme or hand game in addition to doing a few favorites. We will also have different sensory activities and optional craft set up in centers all designed to help prepare with pre-reading skills like rhyming, building vocabulary, separating sounds, and some letter introduction. In addition, these activities will help with fine motor skills through bilateral coordination activities and mid-line crossing which will help when your little gets ready to start writing! The Basic Elements of Drawing and DesignAn introductory program concentrating on a classical approach to realism and art. Focusing on drawing and rendering skills, understanding concepts of value, hue, object space relations, and a basic understanding of color theory. Stressing the importance of sketching, and realism through perceptual drawing, 2- Dimensional design, 3 – Dimensional design, and more water based media – inks and paints. Hands on 3-D activities will be a marriage of aesthetics and function- showing the way Art and Science are crucial components to design. Students will be encouraged to keep a journal when not in class to practice and reinforce concepts learned in class. Constructive critiques will be held regarding homework and in class assignments, this helps develop a wonderful understanding of terminology and inspires creativity and thoughtfulness. Mastering these concepts will allow students to then expand to other media confidently and armed with the tools they need to thoughtfully and artistically approach any problem. We will work with numbers 1-10 in different ways and will also introduce a new scientific theme each week with corresponding sensory based centers. These activities will help with fine motor skills through bilateral coordination activities and midline crossing which will help when your little gets ready to start reading and writing! We will begin learning about our senses and will build from there about using them to make observations about our topics.
