Her story is Our story
Thank you for being a member and supporter of our 2016 Pretty in Pink Throwback Prom! This event started as a simple fundraiser for my mother, Juanita Tucker. Her ongoing battle with breast cancer has depleted her physical, emotional, and financial reserves, leaving only her ever-positive spirit and determination intact. The planning of this fundraiser is still in its infancy, yet it has already morphed in to something much bigger than the original intent.
Her story is our story. How many of you have been personally affected by breast, lung, or prostate cancers? You are not alone. In 2014, .552% of the population (26,770 of 4,849,377) was diagnosed with new cases of cancer in the state of Alabama. Breast cancer comprised the 3rd highest cancer, behind lung and prostate cancers. Of those numbers, the mortality rate is nearly 40% . In cancer cases overall, Alabama is slightly higher than the national average. Alabama is often ranked within the poorest and least educated states in the US. The cost to treat cancer are expected to hit $158 billion in just 4 short years - 2020.
Clearly the residents of Alabama are among some of the hardest hit when tragedy is diagnosed. I've seen this firsthand as my mother has fought her personal battle over the past year, often living off of less than $400 per month. In February of this year, her short term disability payments were stopped, but her cancer treatments, physical therapy, and other medical needs did not. Just last week, it was determined that in addition to continuing treatments beyond this first year anniversary of her diagnosis, she may also need a complete mastectomy and a hysterectomy.
Despite this recent downturn, she sees herself as fortunate. Her insurance is adequate and has covered quite a few of her mounting medical bills, leaving only thousands due, instead of hundreds of thousands. Up until this point, she has been paid nearly $300 per month by her short term disability payments. She and my father qualify for a small amount of food assistance each month. These blessings are far more than many of Alabama's poverty stricken residents have available to them.
With your help, Cullman Today, Fancher Education, Kozmic Sound, Loft 212, Emily Russell Photography, and soon many others, will be able to raise enough money to make a difference in the daily life of not only a single individual, but many, many more as well. Our story is her story.
Thank you, from the absolute bottom of my heart, for your contributions, whether they are time, money, creativity, or organizational in nature. Without you, this event would not be possible, and we would not be able to contribute to making a difference in the lives of those that face a situation that can feel impossible to recover from.
